A monitor screen is a 2-dimensional, limited environment like a billboard, painting, a TV, or a newspaper ad with only a height and width. This characteristic makes it harder for web designers to incorporate other elements such as depth and texture. Imagination is an important factor and must be employed throughout the design process.

To make your design fitting there are elements and principles to follow. These elements and principles will ensure harmony, architecture, and graphic creativity combined with pure imagination. If achieved appropriately, you might be surprised that your website is starting to draw traffic.

Elements of Design

·

Line – is simply a group of points. A plane, a shape, and other forms on the other hand are made of series of lines.

·

Color – also known as hue, it symbolizes a wavelength of light found in the color spectrum. Primary colors include red, yellow, and blue.

·

Volume – is linking lines or creating borders through color, texture to form an illusion.

·

Movement – it signifies the method of changing direction, position, or point of reference by the visual illustration of beginning and ending points. The end product of movement is popularly known as animation.

·

Space – is the area or region that is defined by other design elements.

·

Texture – considered also as an illusory element that defines the physical composition of something. It is simulated through different drawing and media styles.

·

Value – an element that denotes the lightness or darkness of an area, gauged in relation to a rating scale from white to black.

·

Typography – also formed by all other elements like the space.

Principles of Design

·

Balance – also regarded as equilibrium, is the trait of design elements to create a collection of parts appearing to be whole.

·

Contrast – upon placing an element in a format, contrast is instantly formed between the format and the element. It is also called the "automatic principle."

·

Direction – a principle that consumes every design element to influence the viewer’s focus.

·

Economy – used to remove unnecessary design elements. It is the principle that works "on the slim."

·

Emphasis – also recognized as the focal point or dominance. It is developed using uninterrupted or one-time-only design elements in reference to levels of importance. It functions on a hierarchical system.

·

Proportion – the discernment of size in a two-dimensional visual format.

·

Rhythm – a principle that depends on the repetition or recurrence of one or more elements.

·

Unity – symbolizes "one-ness," or "harmony and peace" on your design. This all the so-called end result of all design elements and principles. If other designers start replicating your designs then you can safely say that unity is accomplished.

Web designing is a very fun profession. Ironically, the limitations are defined on the immensity of one’s imaginations. The intricacies of every detail and concept make it more exciting and challenging. There are various tools and software to help you improve and enhance some design and elements.
